EBTC 2024: Behind the scenes

The last day of the European Boys Team Championship is underway, the players have been back on the fairways since 07.30 a.m. - time to draw a first conclusion. Not yet of the sporting kind, it's all to play for right up to the end on the course, it could still be very close for the medal positions.

One thing is clear: everything behind the scenes at the EBTC should also be organised professionally. A tournament of this magnitude requires a lot of preparation, the most structured organisation possible and a lot of coordination.

Owner's representative Christian Guzy Jr. from Diamond Country Club explains: "Without the many volunteers, a tournament like this would be inconceivable. With our employees and all the volunteers, you realise that there is real passion behind it. There are many to mention: From the scorers, who were set up every three holes to make live scoring possible, to the people who take care of the smooth running of the tournament and communication with players in the tournament office, there is a lot going on in the background, from early to late. The referees, the tournament director, our press officers, our club manager, everyone is super professional and has their tasks under control."

The centrepiece is the tournament office, where everything comes together: "Our work starts every day at 7 a.m. with printing out start lists, handing out pin sheets with the flag positions, taking the live scorers to the holes, "evacuating" the players during interruptions caused by thunderstorms, keeping the live scores up to date and preparing scorecards. We were also responsible for the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Chairman of the Championship, Yves Hofstetter from Switzerland, was also busy every day and will be announcing the winners at the award ceremony. A quick visit to the tournament office, where EGA General Secretary Michael Thannhäuser is putting together the final information for the award ceremony. He is there himself because the EGA is organising five competitions across Europe during this championship week, so every hand is needed.

The catering is also immensely important for a successful tournament - on three days there was also a rain interruption during the day. This meant that all the players, support staff and coaches had to flock to the clubhouse at the same time to be catered for. "Having a hotel right next to the golf course is nice for all the teams. Apart from that, the DCC offers everything that was needed for this tournament."

Jochen Bramreiter, cook at the DCC since 2020, managed even the biggest rush with composure. "40 kg of meat was eaten by the people during this week of the tournament. Not counting side dishes and the generous salad and dessert buffet," reveals the chef. It was also hard work for the service brigade under Remzi Selmani, who worked 13 to 16 hours a day to ensure everything ran smoothly. There were 13 service staff to coordinate.

Photographers and TV crews who capture the best scenes of the players are indispensable at a top international tournament. Hans Oberländer, working daily for the GEPA photo agency, took around 300 photos a day. Then there's photo editing, labelling, uploading, etc. - a lot to do. The players were also very active on social media and posted a lot.

There was also another photographer and a three-person TV team from the European Golf Association (EGA) on the players' trail. All of them worked hard to capture the best shots of the young stars.

Press announcements about the European Championships were also made in the run-up to the tournament, a press conference was organised and the media were provided with the most important news of the day on a daily basis. Two extra people were also deployed to generate the daily summaries of the sporting events and interviews.
